A new dawn for Savanna Fire Management in Australia
Corporate Carbon Group welcomes the approval of updated Savanna Fire Management (SFM) methods under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) scheme, marking the culmination of the method review process, and a major milestone for the sector.
The decision by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) confirms the transition to the next phase of SFM, with updated settings designed to support integrity, scalability and long-term confidence in carbon outcomes.
The approved updates introduce more rigorous baselining, refined modelling and improved carbon accounting aligned with the latest scientific understanding of fire in savanna landscapes. Enhanced risk management measures, including updated buffers and technical guidance, further reinforce the framework.
Together, these changes improve transparency, and support more defensible abatement outcomes under the ACCU scheme.
“This is about strengthening what is already one of the most established and scaled approaches in the ACCU framework,” said Corporate Carbon Group Executive Director Gary Wyatt. “Savanna fire management has delivered emissions reductions and land management outcomes across millions of hectares for more than a decade. These updates improve the integrity of the approach and provide greater confidence in the outcomes being generated.”
Wyatt thanked the Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Josh Wilson in leading DCCEEW to finalising these updated methods in a quick and efficient manner.
