Q&A: Argus Media examines proposed global savanna fire management methodology under Article 6.4
Argus Media has published an in-depth Q&A with Robin Gonzalez from Maki Planet Systems following the release of the first global savanna fire management methodology for public consultation under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement.
The interview outlines how the draft methodology draws from the scientific foundations of Australia’s 2015 savanna fire management emissions avoidance method and adapts that framework for international use. It discusses why emissions avoidance forms the basis of this first version, given the UNFCCC’s assessment process and the state of global sequestration science.
The Argus Media article also highlights regions where implementation is expected to progress most rapidly, including the Miombo woodlands and broader Kavango Zambezi area in southern Africa, as well as early pilot activity in Brazil’s Cerrado. The interview also clarifies how Article 6.4 projects relate to Australia’s ACCU Scheme, noting that the two systems meet different regulatory objectives.
Public consultation on the proposed methodology is now open until 11 December 2025. Stakeholders can review the draft and submit feedback via the UN consultation page.
The full Argus interview provides helpful context for stakeholders following the development of high-integrity mitigation methodologies and Article 6 implementation.
