Australia’s new 2035 climate target sharpens focus on delivery tools

Australia’s new 2035 emissions reduction target is an important milestone, but successful delivery will hinge on the frameworks and sectoral plans that support it.
For Corporate Carbon Group, the federal government’s recently released Agriculture and Land Sector Plan and Net Zero Plan provide a guide to how Australia’s 2035 target can be achieved across sectors, including agriculture and carbon. The plans also highlight the importance of the Safeguard Mechanism and ACCU Scheme, with certainty around methods—particularly finalising the savanna fire management method—essential to unlocking investment in Northern Australia.
Spotlighting the synergy between agricultural production and carbon projects, the plans reinforce the need to accelerate abatement activities while creating opportunities for farmers to generate new income and strengthen productivity.
“Targets do not reduce emissions on their own; it is the policy frameworks and market settings that will do the heavy lifting,” said Gary Wyatt, Managing Director, Corporate Carbon Group.
