DCCEEW launches Savanna Carbon Model (SavCam) to strengthen ACCU Scheme integrity
Congratulations to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) on releasing the Savanna Carbon Accounting Model (SavCAM) for user testing on Friday 13 June.
Supporting projects that reduce emissions by using fires earlier in the dry season, two new Savanna Fire Management (SFM) methods are in development under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme. These methods will allow crediting of more carbon pools from savanna fire management projects, including for the first time, carbon stored from both living and dead biomass.
SavCam is a new carbon accounting tool developed to estimate abatement for the two proposed methods.
“Australia is taking big steps to manage wildfires to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its vast savanna landscapes,” notes DCCEEW. “This online tool will support project operators to calculate abatement associated with their fire management efforts under the new methods when they are available for use.”
Corporate Carbon Group has been highly anticipating this update, as robust tools are critically important in enhancing the integrity and effectiveness of the ACCU Scheme.
We encourage all land sector method stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the new SavCam tool and provide feedback during the user testing period.
