New savanna fire management methods near next stage of development

Two new savanna fire management (SFM) methods being developed by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water are set to enable projects to generate more Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).

Building on established practices with the latest scientific insights, the draft methods propose two crediting approaches—Emissions Avoidance and Sequestration and Emissions Avoidance—introducing carbon sequestration calculations that include living biomass and standing dead wood.

Under the ACCU Scheme’s methodology development process, the government submits draft methodologies to the Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee (ERAC) to assess them against Australia’s offset integrity standards.

As a longstanding owner and operator of SFM projects, Corporate Carbon Group has been closely tracking these developments. In light of recent progress, our Managing Director, Gary Wyatt spoke with Quantum Commodity Intelligence about the steps taken so far and the expected next stage.

"Our expectation is that the draft would be going to ERAC for their consideration before public consultation in the near future," Gary said. “We would hope that it would be at the next meeting of ERAC [31 July 2025], although that hasn’t formally been confirmed.”
